People's Health is an initiative of volunteers working various organizations that include Swecha, Forum of IT Professionals (ForIT), doctors, individuals, intellectuals and service minded concerning citizens.
Swecha and ForIT are Not for Profit organizations with the objective of promoting the Free Software Movement and providing support for IT employees. They have also extended their work as non-profits to address the healthcare needs of the poor, who often have difficulty accessing primary health care.
The first medical help-line during first Covid was the initiative of people from these different streams coming together. More than 56,000 people were treated and supplied with medicines and extended other services.
A 300 bedded Covid isolation centre was also run during the second wave of Covid.
For several months now, the organizations have been at the forefront of conducting medical camps to provide care for primary health conditions. They have facilitated the treatment of 500-1000 members every month from different parts of Hyderabad, primarily from slums, working poor, labourers, and senior citizens with no family support. In addition to primary care, the program also provides support for secondary and tertiary care, with doctors helping to cure major ailments.
The program has also facilitated many cataract operations and helped to solve vision problems. Overall, Swecha and ForIT have made significant contributions to improving the healthcare situation for the poor in Hyderabad.
